Alternative Commuting

Gabriel Horchler used to be among the frustrated souls on the frequently backed-up Anacostia Freeway, navigating his motorcycle through stop-and-go traffic and clouds of car exhaust. But one day the river — congestion-free and running parallel to the road — grabbed hold of his imagination. It's been eight years now since Horchler began rowing to work. He bikes from his Cheverly, Md., home to the river and takes a second ride from the river to the Library of Congress, where he works as head of the law cataloging team.
