NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A 19-year-old man has been charged in a shooting that killed three women and injured two others, Norfolk police said Thursday.
Officers called to Whitaker Lane on Wednesday evening found five women suffering from gunshot wounds, police said in a news release. Police Chief Larry Boone has said investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a domestic situation, news outlets reported. After one woman was shot, the other four were shot while trying to help her, Boone said.
Three of the women were pronounced dead on the scene, police said. They were identified as Detra Brown, 42, of Suffolk; Nicole Lovewine, 45, of Norfolk; and Sara Costine, 44, of Lithonia, Georgia. The two other women, ages 19 and 39, were taken to an area hospital with injuries that weren't considered life-threatening and they are expected to recover, police said.
A short time later, police said they arrested Ziontay B. R. Palmer, 19, of Virginia Beach. Palmer is charged with three counts of second-degree murder, two counts of malicious wounding and firearms offenses, police said. He's being held without bond. Court records indicate that Palmer will be represented by a public defender, but don't list a specific attorney.
