ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (AP) — Howard County will soon have a new police chief.
County Executive Calvin Ball announced Monday that Gregory Der will succeed Chief Lisa Myers, who is retiring, according to a news release. Der starts Jan. 1.
Der is currently the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s chief deputy, but he spent 19 years with the county’s police department before retiring in 2017. He started his career in 1997 as a narcotics detective and patrol officer with the Easton Police Department, officials said. Der has served as a school resource officer, hostage negotiator, property crimes detective, and fire and explosives investigator.
“I could not be happier to come home to the Howard County Police Department,” Der said in a statement. “Having graduated from Mt. Hebron High School and worked in the Howard County Police Department for 19 years, I am personally invested in the success of our agency and I know what our citizens rightfully expect of us.”
