Gardners and growers gather for annual Plant Science Day

HAMDEN, Conn. (AP) — Growers and Gardeners from across Connecticut plan to gather in Hamden for the state's 109th Plant Science Day.

The state's Agriculture Experiment Station is putting on the open house Wednesday at its Lockwood research farm.

The farm has been site of numerous agricultural breakthroughs over the past century, including the development in 1919 of a hybrid corn that vastly improved corn yields for farmers across the world.

The open house will include discussions and demonstrations on topics ranging from the history of Connecticut's broad leaf tobacco industry to managing root rot in Christmas trees.

There also will be children's activities and experts on hand to answer identify and answer questions about insects, plant disorders, soils and their management, and other problems facing farmers and gardeners.
