North Carolina woman accused of stealing utility payments

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Police in North Carolina say a woman is facing multiple counts for embezzlement after investigators say she took money from customer payments.

The Pitt County Sheriff's Office tells news sources that 39-year-old Shatreka Joyner is charged with 47 counts of embezzlement. Initially, Joyner was arrested last month and charged with two counts of felony embezzlement. She was released from jail on a $5,000 bond.

An investigation continued into Bell Arthur Water Corp., including an audit which, according to the sheriff's office, revealed 45 additional instances where Joyner had embezzled customer payments made to the business where she worked. It's believed she took between $5,000 and $6,000 from customers making payments.

Joyner is free on a $50,000 secured bond. It's not know if she has an attorney.
