VENTURA, Calif. (AP) — A California man has been sentenced to 27 years to life in prison for killing his pregnant girlfriend.
The Ventura County Star reports 23-year-old Antonio Magana was sentenced Thursday for the March 2014 death of 21-year-old Ashley Moran.
Magana pleaded guilty to first-degree premeditated murder and two special weapons charges in October.
Authorities say a passerby in a Santa Paula park found the body of Moran, who was seven to eight weeks pregnant.
Senior Deputy District Attorney John Barrick says Magana killed Moran because she wanted to keep the baby and he did not.
The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office says Moran was stabbed in the neck, but the cause of death was blunt-force trauma to her head.
Barrick says Magana stabbed Moran, hit her in the back of the head and dragged her into some bushes.
Barrick says a friend told authorities Magana threw a baseball bat in the trash on the night of the killing, when the witness and the couple spent time at the park in the city about 17 miles (27 kilometers) northeast of Ventura.
Magana’s attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.
