Burlington city panel will focus on needs of senior citizens

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — A new panel in the city of Burlington will be focusing on the needs of senior citizens.

The City Council voted unanimously on Monday to form the Council on Aging, WCAX-TV reported.

The committee will be comprised in part of senior citizens, said Council President Kurt Wright, R-Ward 4. Some of the topics that will be discussed are housing, transportation and community engagement, he said.

“Making sure there's enough housing for seniors and also that it's affordable,” Wright said. “Transportation in regards to bus issues and making sure the sidewalks are good particularly around where senior centers are or where seniors are living."

Last year the City Council formed the Senior Center Study Committee to make recommendations on how to provide more efficient services to seniors. The creation of a Council on Aging was one of the recommendations.

“I think that is very important for seniors here to have a voice and be part of this Council on Aging, so I’m looking forward to the process to create this and get it going in the springtime,” Wright said.
