City ordinances to be published in full, voters say
Aspen voters apparently want the ability to read city ordinances in the newspaper, whether they actually read them or not.
Referendum 2C, a proposed amendment to the Aspen’s Home Rule Charter regarding the publication of ordinances, was defeated 1,136-808 in polling yesterday.
The measure would have altered the city’s publication requirements, eliminating the need to publish ordinances that are before the City Council in their entirety. Instead, ordinances would have been published by title only.
The city estimated it could save roughly $10,000 a year in the cost of publishing the full text of ordinances.
The city publishes its ordinances in the Public Notice section of The Aspen Times Weekly.
