X Games fold in international arenas

Staff report

ESPN is pulling the plug on international X Games competitions next year because they don’t make enough money, but the Winter X Games will be held as scheduled in Aspen, the sports TV network announced Thursday.

Events in Barcelona; Munich; Tignes, France; and Foz do Iguacu, Brazil, will be discontinued in 2014, ESPN said in a statement.

“We are proud to have run world-class competitions for both the athletes and spectators; however, the overall economics of these events do not provide a sustainable future path,” ESPN’s statement said.

The Winter X Games will return to Buttermilk ski area outside of Aspen Jan. 23-26. The summer event is moving to Austin, Texas, after an 11-year run in Los Angeles. The Austin games are May 15-18.
