Basalt softball: All-league, all-state honors

Softball: Take center stage.

Postseason honors were announced this week for softball teams in the Western Slope League.

The local awards were announced after the Basalt High School softball banquet, held last weekend.

Five players from the Basalt softball team received all-conference honors.

Two of those five were named all-state and selected to play in the annual all-state softball game last week.

The Longhorns’ softball team included players from Basalt, Roaring Fork and Glenwood Springs high schools.

Bailey Strobel, a Basalt senior, was selected for the all-state game.

Jordan DeCrow, a senior who attends Glenwood Springs High School, also was named to the all-state squads.

Cassidy Young, a sophomore also from Glenwood, was voted to the all-league team by the conference coaches along with junior Britin Strobel.

And Basalt junior Kaity Johnson was named to the all-league honorable mention list.

Young, who led the Longhorns with a 12-5 record in the pitching circle, also hit .523 with three homers for the Longhorns (14-8).

She finished second in player of the year voting to Cedaredge’s Samantha Galley.

Bailey Strobel drove in 30 runs for the Longhorns with a .391 average.

DeCrow drove in 22 runs and hit .514 as the shortstop for the Longhorns.

Britin Strobel hit .533 for the slugging Longhorns. She drove in 24 runs as a junior.

Johnson also drove in 22 runs and hit .387 for the Basalt softball team.

“The chemistry on this team was the best,” said head coach Colin Young. “And the freshman class really produced for us.”

He said the Longhorns focused on hitting again this year with the team advancing to the state playoffs for the second consecutive year.

And for the second year in a row, the Basalt softball team won its opener at state before falling in the regional finals.

Colin Young said the two Longhorns in the all-state game had outstanding games.

DeCrow was 1-for-2 with a walk in the all-star game. Bailey Strobel was 1-3.

“Both the girls had hits in the all-state game,” Colin Young said.

He said he enjoyed coaching the Longhorns’ softball team.

He and his family are relocating to Raleigh, North Carolina, for business reasons.

Daughter Cassidy Young, with the move, will get a second softball season as a sophomore. After playing for the Longhorns in the fall, she will play North Carolina prep girls softball in the spring.
