Western Montana woman drowns in Bitterroot River

HAMILTON, Mont. (AP) — A western Montana woman drowned while floating in the Bitterroot River, Ravalli County officials said.

The 66-year-old woman from Victor was using an inflatable plastic flotation device to float down the river with a group of people on Wednesday evening when she was sucked into a log jam, Sheriff Steve Holton told the Ravalli Republic.

The people who were with her did not see it happen, Holton said.

When they realized she was missing they asked for help. A fisherman spotted her at the bottom of a 10-foot (3-meter) deep pool. He dove in and pulled her out, but she had probably been under water for about 30 minutes at that point, Holton said.

The woman was not wearing a life vest. Her name has not been released.
