Police: Man fatally shot during encounter with officers

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — Police say a man who was firing shots at houses in Chattanooga, Tennessee, has been fatally shot during an encounter with police.

A statement from the Chattanooga Police Department said officers responded around 6 a.m. Monday to a report of shots fired and arrived to the male suspect walking in the street with a firearm and shooting at homes. The statement said officers engaged the man and shots were fired. It does not say who fired the shots.

Police say the man was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

All officers who responded to the call have been placed on routine leave.

The statement says the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office will investigate. The agency declined to release further information.
