CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee fire officials say a 3-year-old boy has died after suffering severe injuries in a house fire.
The Times Free Press reports that flames prevented firefighters from immediately rescuing the child when the Chattanooga Fire Department responded to a Sept. 5 blaze. The newspaper says two adults had been downstairs in the apartment and an adult and three children were upstairs. One of the adults was able to get two of the children out safely, but the 3-year-old was trapped in a back bedroom.
A news release posted Tuesday says the 3-year-old remained in critical condition until he died from the effects of smoke inhalation and oxygen deprivation. The child's father and two siblings were released from a hospital with minor injuries.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
