BAY CITY, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan bridge is not expected to open in time for a popular fireworks display due to problems found by crews repairing the span.
The Liberty Bridge in Bay City currently is closed to all traffic, WNEM-TV reported Thursday.
“Our goal was to have that completed by the Fourth of July celebrations here in the city,” said Lynn Pavlawk, general manager of Bay City Bridge Partners.
The fireworks festival attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators each year, according to the television station.
Potholes and areas of deterioration forced the bridge's closure.
Pavlawk said it's hoped that a couple of traffic lanes can be opened in August for cars to use. Work on the entire bridge isn’t expected to be completed until the end of this year or the beginning of 2023.
Work will include an upgraded mechanical system, a modernized bridge tender tower, LED lighting and flag poles.
