Indictments: School board member embezzled money

FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a school board member in South Carolina took money he was given to attend a conference, then never went.

Another indictment issued Tuesday against Florence District 1 Board Member E.J. McIver says he used a district credit card to buy more than $700 in meals, groceries and other items for himself.

McIver is charged with felony embezzlement and misdemeanor misconduct in office and was suspended from office by Gov. Henry McMaster after his indictments.

McIver’s attorney state Sen. Ronnie Sabb told WPDE-TV he wishes McIver had been given a preliminary hearing to argue their case and McIver will fight the charge with every fiber of his being.

The Morning News of Florence reported McIver has been on the school board for nine years.
