Tribe Wins Injunction Blocking County Voting Plan

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — An American Indian tribe has won a court order blocking Lyman County officials’ plan to hold an at-large election for county commissioners in November.

The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported Friday that the county has developed a plan that would give American Indian voters the chance to be represented by two county commissioners on the five-member board. The Lower Brule Sioux Tribe filed a federal lawsuit in May alleging the county was delaying implementation, meaning the the November election would be under the current at-large system.

U.S. District Judge Roberto Lange issued an injunction Thursday ordering the county to propose a different plan by the end of next week.
