Twenty barrels of produced water spilled into a small creek in North Dakota's McKenzie County after a truck that was carrying the material crashed on an icy road, the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality announced Friday.
The truck operated by Blackshirt, LLC was transporting produced water, which is a by-product of oil and gas development, when it crashed Thursday about 9 miles southeast of Watford City.
The Department of Environmental Quality says the spill is impacting a small unnamed creek on U.S. Forest Service property. The creek discharges into Elkhorn Creek, more than 4 miles downstream from the incident.
State officials are inspecting the site and will continue to monitor the investigation and remediation efforts.
