BARRE, Vt. (AP) — Fire has destroyed a granite storage facility in a Vermont city with a long history in the granite industry.
The fire happened at La Crosse Memorials in Barre on Saturday afternoon. The building is unoccupied in the winter and no major injuries were reported, according to WCAX-TV.
Barre City Fire Chief Doug Brent said it was a sad day for Barre to lose such a building that he estimated was more than 100 years old.
"The heritage of Barre is in the granite industry and these are very important structures to that industry so it is like a death in the family when we have a fire in this type of a building here," Brent said.
