NEW YORK (AP) — A 65-year-old woman and an 8-year-old girl were fatally struck by a sport utility vehicle that jumped the curb in Queens, police said.
It happened at 5:30 p.m. Friday in Jamaica. A 47-year-old woman lost control of the Range Rover she was driving and jumped the curb, hitting the two victims, police said.
The victims were taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead. They were identified as 65-year-old Yuniang Cong and 8-year-old Jashanty Cole.
The driver remained at the scene and was not immediately charged, police said.
Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted that the crash was “heartbreaking and gut-wrenching" and said he and his wife, Chirlane McCray, were sending prayers to the victims' families.
