Kentucky woman charged with murder in possible dog mauling

CONWAY, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky State Police on Friday charged a woman with murder in what authorities think was a fatal mauling of a man by a pit bull.

Police said they charged 38-year-old Melissa D. Wolke of Mount Vernon in the death of 55-year-old Donald W. Abner of Richmond.

Rockcastle County Coroner Marvin Owens has told news outlets he was called to a Conway home Friday for a reported fatal dog attack.

Police say they encountered a very aggressive dog near the victim. Trooper Scottie Pennington said the victim had dog bites on his face and head. The dog was fatally shot by a trooper. The dog belonged to a woman who was visiting the home.

An autopsy is being performed on to confirm Abner's cause of death. An autopsy will also be done on the dog to determine if it was infected with rabies.

Kentucky State Police are still investigating the situation.
