Police: Off-duty deputy shot, killed driver during struggle

CLAY CITY, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky State Police say an off-duty deputy has shot and killed a driver who had escaped authorities during an earlier chase.

Trooper Scott Ferrell tells WKYT-TV that Powell County deputies were searching for the vehicle involved in the chase Tuesday night when the off-duty deputy found it outside Clay City. He says the deputy approached the driver, who then attempted to disarm the deputy.

He says the deputy shot the driver in the ensuing struggle. Authorities didn't immediately release the identities of those involved.

State police are investigating.
