Kentucky State Police: Dog may have fatally mauled man

CONWAY, Ky. (AP) — A pit bull is thought to have fatally mauled a man in Kentucky, authorities said.

Rockcastle County Coroner Marvin Owens told news outlets he was called to a home in Conway on Friday for a reported fatal dog attack.

Kentucky State Police said they “encountered a very aggressive dog” that was “in the immediate area of a suspected victim."

Trooper Scottie Pennington said the victim had dog bites on his face and head. The dog was shot by a trooper, police said.

The dog belonged to a woman who was visiting the home. She was hospitalized due to trauma, news outlets reported.

An autopsy will be done on the victim to confirm a cause of death. An autopsy will also be done on the dog to determine if it was infected with rabies.

The name of the victim wasn't immediately released.
