Officer fired after person injured in accidental discharge

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — A Kentucky police officer was fired after accidentally discharging his personal handgun while off duty and striking another person, police said.

Lexington Officer Nickolas Edge reported the incident Sunday when he accidentally discharged his gun, police said. The person hit suffered a finger injury.

Edge returned to work Tuesday, his first shift since the incident, and was immediately terminated by Chief Lawrence Weathers, the department said in a news release.

Edge, employed in April 2019, was a probationary employee, the release said. The department is not required to go through the disciplinary process for probationary employees for this incident, the release said.

No charges were expected, the release said.
