Expanded Maine Deer Hunt Gets Started With Youth Deer Day

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine's expanded deer hunt got started on Saturday with a special day for young hunters.

The state's Youth Deer Day allows hunters who hold a valid junior hunting license to pursue deer on Saturday. The state's Maine Resident Only Day follows on Oct. 30, and the rest of the season runs from Nov. 1 to 27.

The state gave out more than 150,000 any-deer permits this year. Officials hope for more participation in the hunt to help manage the growing deer herd.

Maine's moose season also resumes on Monday in far northern Maine. The longest stretch of the moose season also runs from Nov. 1 to 27. Maine Resident Only Day also applies to moose hunters.
