St. Leo University lacrosse player dies in car crash

SAINT LEO. Fla. (AP) — A lacrosse player for Florida's Saint Leo University died in a single car accident, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Ernest Blake Crownover, 19, of Eaton, Colorado, died at the crash scene early Wednesday, the agency said in an accident report.

Troopers said Crownover's 2018 Dodge Challenger went off the road and onto the shoulder, where it hit a concrete support for the gantry displaying the entrance ramp sign for Interstate 75.

Crownover was a goalie for the men's lacrosse team and a member of the U.S. Air Force ROTC, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

“Blake joyfully excelled at everything he did and made all of us better for having known him,” Brad Jorgensen, the team's head coach, said in a statement.

Troopers said Crownover was wearing a seat belt and that alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

St. Leo University is north of Tampa on Florida's west coast.

“We are all deeply saddened by his loss and are feeling the impact across University Campus today. He and his family are in all our prayers,” university president Jeffrey Senese said in a news release.
