WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — A man charged with killing a 21-year-old woman in a Massachusetts rooming house was held without bail Wednesday pending a hearing to determine whether he is a danger to society.
Djarflo Irving, 37, of Worcester, was charged with manslaughter and other offenses in connection with the death early Tuesday morning of Suheill Ortiz, Worcester police said.
A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf at his arraignment.
Ortiz was found by police in the Worcester apartment building just after 1 a.m. with a gunshot wound to the chest. She was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.
The shooting took place in a 14-room brick apartment building that's listed on the National Register of Historic Places, according to The Telegram & Gazette.
Family members told the newspaper that Ortiz, the mother of a 1-year-old daughter, was at a small gathering of friends and heard that the suspect took out a gun to show people when it went off.
Irving's attorney did not comment.
