LIMERICK, Maine (AP) — The bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland will preside over the centennial of a Maine church next month.
St. Matthew Church in Limerick is turning 100. The diocese said Bishop Robert Deeley will preside over an anniversary mass at the church on Oct. 16.
The original church was dedicated in 1921 after nine years of priests holding mass in the shipping room of a Limerick mill. The church was enlarged in 1939 and then a new church was dedicated in 1987. It was destroyed in a fire in 1989 and rebuilt the following year before being dedicated in 1991.
Rev. Bill Labbe, pastor of St. Matthew, said there “have been many opportunities to learn, serve, and be part of this special parish community while honoring 100 years of love, mercy, and faith.”
