Pickup In Police Chase Hits Car, Car Passenger, 72, Dies

IVA, S.C. (AP) — A pickup truck fleeing police rear-ended a car, fatally injuring a 72-year-old passenger in the car, South Carolina authorities said.

Joseph Gardner, from Iva, died Monday of injuries from the crash late Sunday, Anderson County Coroner Don McCown told news outlets.

The chase had crossed the line from Abbeville County into Anderson County, and both Abbeville County deputies and Iva police were chasing the truck, McCown said in a news release.

The Buick in which Gardner was riding ran off the road and into a traffic sign, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, which is investigating the wreck along with the coroner's office.

Both drivers were injured, as was a passenger in the pickup truck, according to a highway patrol news release.

Iva is roughly 45 miles southwest of Greenville.
