Ex-youth pastor charged with child sex abuse dies in jail

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — A former youth pastor intern accused of sexually abusing children in the 1970s has died in a South Carolina jail.

News outlets report that 64-year-old Peter William Cooper was pronounced dead Sunday morning, according to Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger.

Cooper had been awaiting trial on charges of committing a lewd act on a minor in Spartanburg and Greenville counties. Cooper was arrested in Alabama and jailed in Spartanburg County in February .

Clevenger says Cooper had been moved to a medical pod earlier because of medical complaints.

The coroner's office says an autopsy didn't show signs of foul play.

Spartanburg County deputies say Cooper had been primarily employed at churches in Alabama after his short stint in South Carolina.
