PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Authorities say a fire in a southwest Philadelphia apartment building has claimed the life of one man and critically injured another.
Fire crews responding shortly after 5:30 a.m. Sunday reported thick, black smoke billowing from the three-story building.
Emergency crews helped several residents from the building before declaring the blaze under control about a half-hour later.
Police say a man estimated to be about 30 to 40 years old was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead an hour later. Another man about 30 to 40 years old was taken to the hospital and listed in critical condition.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
