CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine (AP) — Hundreds of mountain bikers have descended upon Maine's tallest ski mountain for racing this weekend.
An estimated 500 mountain bikers are participating in the MAXXIS Eastern States Cup ESC enduro and downhill series debut at Sugarloaf. Practice runs were being held on Saturday, followed by competition Sunday.
“We’re wicked happy,” Adam Craig, who's behind the effort, told the Bangor Daily News. “We’ve got a bunch of new trails up here to share with everybody."
The event is the eighth of 11 stops on the Eastern States Cup enduro circuit this year.
Craig, the former top-ranked American on the International Cycling Union’s World Cup circuit, modeled the Sugarloaf trails after those he raced on while competing internationally for more than a decade.
The event is part of Sugarloaf's effort to become a destination for both competitive and recreational mountain bikers.
