Missoula County Identifies Man Who Died After Police Pursuit

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — An East Helena man died after a weekend police pursuit that began in Missoula and ended in a pond west of the city, Missoula County officials said Wednesday.

Jade Champagne, 33, died Saturday evening, Sheriff and Coroner T.J. McDermott said.

Champagne fled a traffic stop in Missoula and eventually drove into a field near a school and then into a pond, said Missoula Police spokesperson Lydia Arnold.

Champagne got out of the car and was swimming near shore, but he ignored attempts from officers to get him out of the pond, Arnold said. He went under water.

Search and rescue crews recovered his body later that night.
