On a per-share basis, the Omaha, Nebraska-based company said it had net income of $2.74.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of eight analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $2.70 per share.

The railroad posted revenue of $6.01 billion in the period, which did not meet Street forecasts. Six analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $6.06 billion.
