On a per-share basis, the Santa Clara, California-based company said it had profit of $4.89. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to $1.46 per share.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of 15 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.30 per share.

The security software maker posted revenue of $1.98 billion in the period, also surpassing Street forecasts. Sixteen analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $1.97 billion.

For the current quarter ending in April, Palo Alto expects its per-share earnings to range from $1.24 to $1.26.

The company said it expects revenue in the range of $1.95 billion to $1.98 billion for the fiscal third quarter.

Palo Alto expects full-year earnings in the range of $5.45 to $5.55 per share, with revenue ranging from $7.95 billion to $8 billion.
