The Hartsville, South Carolina-based company said it had net income of 51 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for costs related to mergers and acquisitions and non-recurring costs, were $1.49 per share.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of three analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.44 per share.

The packaging maker posted revenue of $1.68 billion in the period.

For the current quarter ending in December, Sonoco expects its per-share earnings to range from $1.15 to $1.35.

The company expects full-year earnings in the range of $5.05 to $5.25 per share.
